You raised shoplifting as a concern, so here’s a quick local update. Dear Valley Ward Members,
Op Retail – Whole-Team Weekend Operation Targets Shoplifting and Supports Valley Ward Businesses
During the weekend, Valley and Larkswood Safer Neighbourhood Team participated in dedicated Op Retail deployments across the Valley Ward in support of the Ward Priority to tackle shoplifting, retail crime, and associated anti-social behaviour. This coordinated operation focused on preventing offences, disrupting known offenders, reassuring businesses, and strengthening partnerships with the local retail community.
Officers conducted a combination of high-visibility foot patrols, static patrols, and plain-clothes operations at key retail locations identified through local intelligence and previous reports of offending. Targeted patrols were carried out at Cork Tree Retail Park E4-Venues included- Curry's, Decathlon, Pet at Home, Aldi, Hobby Craft, Sport Direct and Halfords, and Sainsbury's, Morrisons Supermarket, and local service stations, ensuring a consistent policing presence throughout peak trading hours and periods of increased footfall.
The deployment of uniformed officers provided a highly visible deterrent to potential offenders, whilst plain-clothes officers were utilised to identify suspicious behaviour, monitor known crime hotspots, and support the detection and disruption of those involved in shoplifting and retail-related crime. Officers remained vigilant for individuals linked to previous theft offences, organised retail crime, anti-social behaviour, and other criminal activity affecting local businesses.
Throughout the operation, officers engaged extensively with store managers, security personnel, retail staff, and members of the public. These engagements provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing concerns, review current crime trends, share intelligence regarding repeat offenders, and offer crime prevention advice aimed at reducing opportunities for theft. Businesses were encouraged to continue reporting incidents promptly and to share relevant information and CCTV footage to assist with investigations and the identification of offenders.
The operation also provided reassurance to staff and customers, many of whom expressed concerns regarding the impact of shoplifting on businesses and the wider community. Officers highlighted the importance of partnership working and reinforced the commitment of the Safer Neighbourhood Team to addressing retail crime through a combination of enforcement, prevention, and engagement activities.
The weekend operation demonstrated a strong collaborative approach between local policing teams, retailers, and security staff. The visible police presence was well received by businesses across the ward, with positive feedback received regarding officer engagement and proactive patrol activity. The operation contributed towards increasing public confidence, gathering community intelligence, and creating a hostile environment for those seeking to commit theft and related offences. Outcome: The entire team worked collectively throughout the weekend under Op Retail, delivering targeted patrols and business engagement across the Valley Ward. The operation supported the ward priority of reducing shoplifting, preventing repeat offending, protecting businesses, and maintaining a safe retail environment for staff, customers, and the wider community. Further patrols and partnership activity will continue as part of the ongoing commitment to tackling retail crime and improving community safety
The Met is cracking down on street crime, like shoplifting, people doing drugs and phone-snatching. We’ve put hundreds more officers on the frontlines of community crime-fighting teams, upping visible patrols in the right ‘hot spots’ so we can deter and catch criminals. We’re now arresting more than 1,000 extra criminals every month and seeing ‘neighbourhood crime’ down 14%. But we know there is more to do. That’s why we’re stepping up our use of technology, increasing our operations and working with retailers to make it less appealing for criminals to commit these crimes in the first place. If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible. For more guidance, see our page on how to spot a shoplifter. |
